The Queer Student Union was founded in 1972 as the Gay Student Union. QSU is Charlottesville's oldest organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning individuals. For more in-depth information on the history of QSU, please visit the Queer UVA History site.

We hold meetings on Thursdays throughout the semester. Each meeting is dedicated to a specific topic. Last year, meetings included discussions on religion, marriage, race, domestic violence, and drag to name a few. In lieu of certain meetings, we also have held movie nights, pot luck dinners, and ice cream socials. Everybody is always welcome to attend.

In addition to our meetings, QSU organizes weekend trips such as apple picking and tubing on the James River. Each semester, QSU also organizes "Proud To Be Out Week" (PTBOW), which is designed to raise awareness of queer issues. During this week, we invite speakers, paint Beta Bridge, try our hand at Queer Trivia, and hold other fun activities. The week culminates in Drag Bingo!, the much anticipated and very highly attended event which showcases our various exciting talents.

The Queer Student Union is part of the Minority Rights Advocacy Coalition, which consists of the Asian Student Union, the Latino Student Union, the Black Student Alliance, the Middle Eastern Leadership Council, and Feminism is for Everyone.

The Queer Student Union also works alongside the LGBT Resource Center, sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Students (ODOS), the Serpentine Society, an LGBT alumni group sponsored by Alumni Hall, and other various organizations in the area.
